Meet the Thaws, in the first of a series of Oakes family profiles.
Dan and Billie Thaw are the founders and Directors of The Oakes. In 1998, they set up “The Oakes Trust”, the charity that owns and oversees the centre. They lived in The Oakes for six years and now live in the stable block behind the big house.
They were involved with all the renovations required to open the centre (July 2000), and they have been expanding and developing the work ever since.
They have four children. Tom (19) is at Nottingham University studying physiotherapy, George (17) is in Year 13 and is hoping to study sports science after completing a gap year, Charlie (14) is in Year 10 and Rosie (10) is in Year 6.
Dan and Billie were both P.E. (Physical Education) teachers before starting The Oakes. Billie still teaches part-time and all the family love sport.
The idea for The Oakes came in 1994 as they spent time volunteering at Teen Ranch, an activity centre in Sydney, Australia, where the gospel was at the heart of every camp.
Their dreams for the future include keeping on improving every aspect of The Oakes and seeing more gospel-focused centres established in the UK and abroad.
- Praise for God’s faithful provision which has enabled The Oakes to grow and develop.
- Pray for more gospel-focused centres to be set up, pointing more people to Jesus.
