Family Profile: The Gilchrists

The Gilchrists came to work at The Oakes in November 2013 from New Zealand where they had lived for eight years.

Johnny is the Programme Manager at The Oakes: in charge of everything from ordering pond shoes to thinking up new activities. He also speaks on camps and is passionate about telling kids how much God loves them.

Joanne is a writer and has already published her first book, “Looking for Love” ( and created “God for Kids” (, an app for primary school aged children. She also speaks around the country and blogs about issues that Christians face today.

Gabriella (11) has just started secondary school and loves the challenge of all the new subjects but not all the homework! She has recently been baptized and hopes to join the Oakes team one day, too.

Briony (9) is extremely brave and loves anything pink, fluffy and unicorn-like. When she grows up she wants to be a baker, an actress and a famous singer!

Eve (2) is loads of fun and has already learnt that if she wants to watch TV all she has to do is say “Rugby?” to her Dad.

The whole family are also heavily involved in running their church, Beauchief Baptist, where Johnny is a Deacon.

  • Praise for the obvious calling on the Gilchrists’ lives to share the good news of Jesus.
  • Pray for them to keep close to God and shine his light wherever they go.
