Summer Camps Cancelled

Published

Dear Friends of the Oakes,

We’re writing today with heavy hearts and an update that you may have anticipated even as you hoped it wouldn’t come: The Oakes Holiday Centre will not open for the summer of 2020.

In all our 20 years of camps, we never imagined we’d have to make an announcement like this. We know this news is as heartbreaking for you and your children to hear as it is for us to share. At the same time, we are confident that it is the right decision, not only for the welfare of our campers and staff, but to ensure we can run camps long into the future.

Each of you has paid us the incredible honor of trusting us with your children. It’s a responsibility we take seriously, and it is the driving force in our decision. Since the word “coronavirus” first entered our vocabulary, we’ve emphasized that our plans for the summer would ultimately be based on guidance from the relevant authorities along with God-led prayer and our duty of care for the health and well-being of those connected to camps.

Many other camps will be making similar decisions at this time based on their understanding of the latest government information. What became increasingly clear to us was that, owing to social distancing and the other significant changes we would have to make in this current climate, the whole camp atmosphere would be radically different if we were to open. Whilst we remain committed to communicating the gospel of Christ to children and young people, the Trustees and Senior team here at The Oakes felt that would not be possible in a safe environment this summer.

We are truly saddened by having to make this statement and would like to say a huge thank you to all those who have done all they can working from home to try and make camps at this time a reality whether working on our virtual camp material or trying to find a way to make summer and other camps viable. We would like to say a special thank you to our Impact Team who have now unfortunately had their year at The Oakes cut short too.

Thank you for your patience and understanding and support at this unprecedented time in our 20 years of running camps at The Oakes. We look forward to having a big 21st birthday party when we are back next year. Please do contact us if you have any further queries.

If you already have a camp booking for the summer we will be contacting you individually in the next few days.

May God bless you all and we look forward to seeing you again on camp very soon.
