Questions about Camps
What are age requirements for camps?
Legal issues require a camper to be 8 years old by the first day of camp in order to attend. Generally a weekend camp will be for 8-11s, 11-15s, or 14-18s.
Who runs the camp programme and what activities are there?
The Oakes team runs the camp. Refer to the last page for a sample program.
Who gives the talks and what do they cover?
The Oakes team shares the Christian message.
Who leads the dorm times and what are they?
The dorm leaders (Oakes team) discuss what has been said in the talks and/or share in small group Bible study. Visiting leaders are welcome to join in the dorm times.
Who leads the workshops (held during school holiday camps) and what are they about?
The Oakes team discusses a variety of topics of interest to the committed Christian and the youngster who is just looking.
Who is responsible for the meals, washing up, cleaning, and running the house?
The Oakes team (plus support team).
Do the visiting groups have any responsibilities for cooking/household jobs?
Generally no—it is expected the visiting children/young people and their leaders will respect the building/grounds and help keep it tidy and litter free. On departure, help with tidying dorms, etc., is appreciated.
Who deals with medication and first aid issues?
Several team members have the First Aid at Work certificate and are the on-call first aiders. Most team members have had First Aid training and will clean up small cuts and grazes. The dispensation of all medication (including Paracetamol) is taken very seriously at The Oakes. All medication (except “as needed” inhalers) must be submitted and stored safely away from the campers. Medication is dispensed by two team members at the required time. Visiting leaders are asked not to dispense any medication to any child who is younger than 18 years old.
